Details of A Rococo Chest of Drawers
The word Rococo comes from the French word Rocaille meaning rock shape and the Italian word Barocco meaning excessive. However It was not until the 19th Century the term for the period was invented. During the actual period it was referred to as "Louise Quinze" after the ruling king. As seen on the featured chest of drawers made during the Rococo period 1750-1775 the lines were soft and asymmetric. The S curved "knees" on the chest is a characteristic attribute for the period as well as the hardware. During the 18th Century a technique to gild brass was developed in France which gave the Rococo chests their overly decorated look.
